A body corporate in Midrand, Johannesburg, has threatened to handover its tenants to the credit bureau for failing to pay rent during the national lockdown.

The affected tenants of San Ridge Heights claim they were unable to pay rent this month due to loss of income as a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The tenants said when the lockdown was announced, they communicated with the body corporate about their situation, but instead their electricity was cut off. The letter reads:"We acknowledge the impact that the lockdown has on tenants and realise that many people might lose their jobs or part of their income and find it difficult to meet all their obligations during this time. Please note that should you fail to honour your monthly rental commitment, it will have a negative impact on your credit record."

"... I told Adriaan that it was wrong to switch off the lights for people because they owed. Since it is a private-owned property, they should find an amicable solution. What I know is that there are no evictions during lockdown."One of the tenants, who spoke to Sowetan on condition of anonymity, said Louw has been harassing him by switching off the power.

MbuyiseniNdlozi Greed, Greed, Greed!!! It’s business as usual. Where is the compassion? Has covid killed our compassion also?

MbuyiseniNdlozi This is illegal and people should read more about it RentStrikeSA

Not only them, same with student accommodation. Even if the it is not used.

I wonder if they paid for the GTIs

People mustn’t pay that RUBBISH & if they’re evicted or handed to credit bureau, body corporate must be named & shamed, they’re Selfish. They must relocate to Orania Finish!

Take the land

Anytime in south Africa a tenant can give you 30 days notice and walk away , landlords need the same option ! South African government is passing the buck for affordable housing on to private individuals ! After the lock down you are liable for all your rental !

Landlords and property owners can not be responsible for the housing issue that south Africa has ignored ! Many landlords are not millionaires who can cover every one's rent , there are millions of people who have small rental properties, non rental puts the owners inproblem

And people believed the president when he said all is well. We will concur this virus while some are becoming homeless and jobless.

Hand over to do what to put you on a list that are on. Or to put you in a position to scrap that debt when the government reset credit score next year ?

Unbelievable!!

They want their money ..we don't have these kind of money now SABCNews CyrilRamaphosa JacksonMthembu_

And what's wrong with that ?

Switching off lights is illegal , they do not own the electricity.

Fuck that...

The issue we all facing MbalulaFikile this due us that can’t move can local movement of our furnitures be allowed DlaminiZuma

ITS IRRESPONSIBLE S PLEASE SWITCH THE LIGHTS ON

Even without lockdown, it is unlawful to cut off electricity of tenants without court order according to Rental Housing Act. Many landlord/agents will take advantage of closure of Rental Housing Tribunal. Contact SERI_RightsSA for assistance.

You see they know ANC just talk n cannot protect vulnerable tenants. You want land to build your own, they object, you dont pay rent, they evict your or blacklist you. Black People You Are On your Own.

And So It Begins!!Mankind at its very best!

SA Body corporates & their service providers who do security painting and maintenance are generally white. They rake millions in levies & rent under their unofficial WEE, hence this extreme level arrogance amid Covid-19 outbreak. Land expropriation must be done faster!

Money rules the world. We are all slaves to a monetary system that is cruel and lethal. We are all to blame for playing part in a system that ensures we take advantage of eachother and remain in debt
