The Food and Drug Administration authorized Friday the emergency use of remdesivir for patients with severe cases of COVID-19. Drugmaker Gilead Sciences' lobbying hit a new high in the first quarter.

Gilead is donating the first 1.5 million doses of remdesivir, but after that, the company has declined to say what remdesivir's price might be. During a conference call with investors on Thursday about first quarter earnings, analysts asked Gilead CEO Daniel O'Day whether they could expect similar returns on remdesivir as they've seen with the company's other products.

Taxpayers helped fund research for remdesivir and other potential vaccines and treatments, so Schakowsky added a line to the"The line in the bill essentially said that any drug that was made with any money from taxpayers would have to have reasonable pricing," she said. But, she added, a problem arose when another line made its way into the final bill that undercut the pricing assurance.

"It seems to me then that we are in a hostage situation if that's the view of the federal government and the people in charge," Schakowsky said."If this is what they want to extract from consumers in order to cure it, it's immoral. And it will end in a lot of deaths because people won't be able to afford their drugs."

As usual, profit over people. Gilead lobbying casts doubt on effective and viability of drug in light of potential massive profits based on false hopes

What is NPRs lobby budget? Or is the payback after the apportionment?

They need to explain to stockholders. Drug to be approved based on clinical efficacy not lobbying.

Seems very fishy that they knew in Jan to March of this year that they would have a treatment. Investigate

The race to' pick me!' Then Trump buys stocks and keeps saying it over and over again. No thanks. When the CULT members find out it's expensive and ' the fuhrer won't buy it for us!?!' They won't take it.

I wonder why...

lobbying..... how bad ideas see the light of day

It's not about capability or competence, it's about who you know & how much you're willing to pay for that access. I've known this with regards to lobbyists & found it deplorable, but now more than ever, lives are at stake! They ALL seem to maintain a certain 'moral flexibility'!

Lobbyists need to be banished

So?

What. About. The Lancet Double-Blind Study. That. Shows. No. Change. In. Outcome!!

Wow; better re-do the tests for this drug.

The drug DOES show promise. It will be many many more human trials and manufacturing ramp up before it will be widely available. And this is NOT a cure! Most of these things are INCREMENTAL. They are not the perfect solutions average people are expecting.

Not a surprise. And this treatment... is not really a game changer.

It would be great if NPR reported on the $ that is behind Gilead, & how BlackRock plays a role in the company. To his great credit, CEO Fink of Blackrock has enormous integrity in confronting Trump:

And possibly the biggest story related to treatment for COVID gets no press and has no lobbyists leronlimab

The corrupt American political system hard at work

NPR: It's a fungible asset held by various hedge funds; The 1 hedge fund with shares of Gilead is BlackRock (CEO: Laurence Fink). 'BlackRock, is the largest investor in weapon manufacturers through its U.S. Aerospace and Defense ETF.'

Just another reason I remain skeptical of the initial drug study results. Time and replicate trials will tell. In the meantime, the compny shouldn't be promoting itself.

Gilead is more Shkreli than Salk.

This is cost of doing business in with Trump's administration. Jared Kushner is supervising business engagement in government response to COVID19. I am wondering how much of that money will end up in Trump's re-election campaign?

We vote. Get a sticker. Big Corp takes it from there. How is this a democracy?

. All pharm companies, that afford to, do. That’s why we pay more for drugs than any other country.

Pennies compared to what they will make on sales. Report on sales--what are they? Who owns Gilead? (CEO: O' Day) Which politicians does the company donate to? Here's part of the back story, NPR. Please report fully--

Plutocracy is inherently corrupt. Besides generating self-extinction, irrational capitalism has amply proven itself detrimental to societal well-being.

Sadly, hydroxychloroquine is off-patent and almost free.

Why is that legal in our country?

So don't take it when you can't breath

Drug companies are modern day mafia / drug lords

This is why Big Pharma gets a bad name. Let the science speak for itself instead of trying to sell it to people.

Do not take vaccines, they are poison!

Does that name scare the shit out of anyone else?.
