Even the Prime Minister's harshest critics admit that he has not been hamstrung by ideology in responding to COVID-19. |OPINION

That Scott Morrison is a clever, canny politician is beyond dispute. The Prime Minister’s singular achievement 14 months after winning the 2019 election has been to convey the impression that the third-term government he leads is a stripling first-term administration. A government on training wheels is more likely to be forgiven for its missteps. The last national government dispatched by voters as a "oncer" was Jim Scullin’s Depression-era Labor administration back in 1931.

Last Friday, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg flirted with danger in signalling his desire to emulate the radical free-market agenda of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, whose governments respectively transformed Britain and America in the 1980s. The Morrison government’s "take the credit/deflect blame’ shtick is wearing thin. After all, the Commonwealth has ultimate responsibility for Australia’s border security – spelt out in the constitution, Quarantine Act and Biosecurity Act .

Rubbish. He's been reluctant and then conned with no option back to reluctant again and I'm not his harshest critic by a long way.

I would agree with this headline. He is hamstrung by his desire for holidays and lack of desire to get back to work in the parliament though

I’m so glad I’ve cancelled my subscription. This is turning into another Soviet Pravda propaganda 😂 Just like News Corp

What's this doing in The Age? How did Vanstone allow this egregious misprint? 😂

Age article identifies the issues, politiking minuses and pragmatic plusses. The first step festering sore is very tardy underwhelming actions to support ill temp workers so spreading Covid be controlled. Once done, $$$$s targeted stimulus but ongoing silence. Issue wont go away

Bullshit, there has been nothing much to deal with except endless hysteria.

If it was up to Scotty from marketing, we would have huge issues here, as he was pretending there is no Covid here. Dan and Gladys pushed him to take action, as they took actions in vic and nsw. He cares not.

curtin_rc BS

curtin_rc What? What a misleading entree précis ie 'wearing thin'. Then an alleged 'backflip' fawning that concedes no bias of ideology is driving his responses. Once I lamented being unsuccessful in employment with you. It must be awful for those who gained it to now view your pieces.

Thatcher and Reagan were driven by economist Friedman's laughable fantasy of a market with rational behaviour. The LNP is still mourning the passing of the 20th century. No new ideas.

Actually, he has. He refuses to take ownership for issues, has frozen out sectors from financial support & is now prosecuting a massive neocon agenda without any accountability. Australia’s own Victor Orban & Costello’s Pravda does opinion pieces like this. Don’t like democracy?

Refreshing and rational to act always on the best advice ! It would be thousands a day in Victoria if we weren’t

Really What about Josh and Regan/Thatcher What about the attack on Universities What about casuals and international students and visa holders What about private for profit aged care providers not being accountable?

About time that a journalist has actually identified the responsibility of the Federal government in this situation in Victoria. The PM washes his hands of this and nobody has questioned him.

Crap article. Would far rather scomo than disaster dan

You have to be joking? They are pushing Thatchers libertarianism as the way out of the Covid crisis FFS - including removing worker protections. Excellent article from vanbadham
