Mr Murray said Queensland Deputy Premier Stephen Miles on Monday said the state was doing very well economically, thanks to the government’s decision to keep borders closed. Mr Murray said the deputy premier’s statement was not true. “Before coronavirus, that state had racked up $90 billion in debt, and now, they’re trying to say now under cover of COVID, it’s up to $102 billion,” he said.
Queensland’s unemployment rate is at 8.8 per cent, 1.3 per cent higher than the national average of 7.5 per cent. Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick said on Monday the state’s debt had increased to over $100 billion because the state government was protecting jobs in the state, however he confirmed the unemployment rate would still be up at eight per cent at the June quarter next year.
