'I Am Heartbroken': Your Letters About Public Service Loan Forgiveness

I have said for years that this program is a sham. The criteria eliminate EVERYONE from eligibility. Even if I could have qualified, it was more worth it for me to seek a living wage at another nonprofit than to work at UMD for 10 years on a frozen salary.

laurelwamsley My wife is enrolled in this program. It started to become clear last year that, given its mismanagement, making financial and career decisions based on the loan forgiveness would be a mistake. Imagine if this happened with the G.I. bill.

I wept and felt as if I had to put my life plans further on hold. Ten years of faithful payments to an unqualified loan program that I didn't know was unqualified. A misleading promise is actually a hurtful lie.

Thank you for your continued reporting on the TEACH grant and PSLF! I’m enraged that the program is such a scam, it’s been something I’ve hoped would help me.

It really is sickening! I don't understand why the interest needs to be so high, either. I've more than paid the original balance and still owe the same amount after 18 years! It's good to know I'm not alone

samsanders I’m 8 years in on my public service and found out 2 years ago that my payment plan wasn’t one of the qualified plans...even though the payment was higher than the qualified plan I was changed to. I wasted 6 years, but it could’ve been much worse

adonsports No offense but boo hoo. I paid for all of my undergraduate and grad degrees with cash out of my own pocket and no loans. Don’t reward chumps that are trying to get free money. We are all dealing with educational inflation. It doesn’t mean you should get your loans forgiven.

If there was a breach of contract regarding debt forgiveness, it should be easy to prove in court. Does anyone happen to have the contract? It is also worth pointing out that all of the terms should have been met. If they haven't, none of these people have a leg to stand on.

I'm in the 99%. Was shocked to find out after 16 years of continuous gov employment and missing no loan payments I was denied because they were deemed 'non-qualifying' payments. Lol, ripoff program and misleading.

In this matter, Betsy DeVos is a loan industry stooge.

When you take a loan, then want to avoid repayment, you aren’t the aggrieved party. The lender is.

Pay your debts.

I’m currently in this program but I’m switching to another qualifying position and I really hope it doesn’t get messed up in the process.

Not a shock given current administration. Need a student loan revolution or overhaul next decade or economy is doomed. How the hell will any of us be able to afford a home? Keep cutting those corporation taxes and allow private jet deductions though
