Pretty sure the event was mostly to attract serious engineers to the project and show how serious they are about AI. The event was super technical for the average person to digest.
Autopilot is the greatest marketing masterclass in the world. Autopilot in its early days was nothing more than a glorified cruise control, Elon was able to sell it as that and it likely saved the company by giving it an image of being “the future”.
