Democrats are running out of time to prepare an unpalatable debt limit contingency plan as Republicans keep stonewalling and the nation nears a devastating default

House Budget Committee Chair John Yarmuth joined at left by House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff talks to reporters about the"Protecting Our Democracy Act" which will curb the power of the president at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021. | J. Scott Applewhite/AP Photo.

“You understand the significance of default?” the Vermont Independent said of the Treasury Department running out of money. “It would bring the entire world’s economy to its knees. Do I think Republicans are that crazy? No, I don’t.” The Senate GOP could make it easier for Democrats to handle the debt limit on their own by opposing it without mounting a formal filibuster, letting the majority pass a measure with its 50 votes plus Vice President Kamala Harris' tiebreaker. However, Senate conservatives say they're also committed to blocking that path.

“The money has already been spent,” Tester added. “It was spent under a Republican Senate, a Republican House and Republican president. So I think the Republicans have some obligation here to do what's right."

JuddLegum · 6h Remember when every Republican in Congress voted for trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations and they paid for it by saying “it’ll pay for itself”

The Turtle tries to screw the American credit every time this comes up so he can blame the Democrats. First he shelters his 39 million in assets and then votes against paying the nation's debts.

If you don't want that 'devastating default' stop trying to strong-arm trillions of dollars in debt Omnibus monstrosity bills. Split them into leaner modular bills to be voted on separately and let each bills merit decide if it gets passed on not. banTheOmnibus

I have said this for years and it rings more true today. The GOP has a scorched earth philosophy.

😂😂😂

Biden should just announce that he’s unilaterally abolishing the debt ceiling. “If Congress mandates I spend $X and tax $X - $Y, I have the constitutional duty to sell $Y worth of Treasury securities to preserve the full faith and credit of the United States.”

Correct headline: Democrats Up Against Deadline To Save Country As Republicans Try To Destroy It AGAIN.

The Dems want it both ways and ultimately have to decide whether they want GOP votes on any bills or not.

Republicans trying to hurt our country for political gain is on point for them. Imagine voting for them knowing they hate you.

'Republicans refuse to govern & stonewall needed measures for government to function' is the headline. We pay those Republican saboteurs $174,000 apiece to do grave harm to our nation.

Republicans threaten American economy as Dems fighting to get them to agree to raise debt ceiling*

The last time the R's tried this, it backfired on them badly. What do they think will be different this time?

Why Congress can’t quit playing chicken with the debt ceilingIn recent decades, debt ceiling votes have become increasingly fraught as Republicans have used the risk of default to extract concessions from Democratic presidents. Republicans are for distraction and divisiveness. Democrats are for unity and cooperation. Work something out and get it done for the people.

Why the GOP is threatening to block the debt limit extensionRepublicans say the debt ceiling must be extended, yet they promise to use the filibuster to block the bipartisan bill that would do so on Monday. GOP desire to weaponize the issue politically is behind the unusual position. If the Dems put up a clean bill with no pork or BS, the Reps better support. The Reps better get something better for election ads since they are all in on the past deficit spending. In shadow, he looks even more like a turtle. alaskarebel The Republicans don't want to pay for their bills from the last administration.

Why the GOP is threatening to block the debt limit extensionRepublicans say the debt limit must be extended. They support the contents of the bill to which that extension is attached. And they're promising to block that vote. Here's why. The Left politicize everything. Then have Leftist rags like the New York Times, Washington Post, and even Yahoo ‘News’ play waterboy to their nonsense. The last time Republicans played this game, the US credit rating was dropped for the first time in history. The debt ceiling was increased twice under Trump, on his way to adding $7T to the debt while claiming the best economy in history.

Congress braces for high-stakes week over shutdown, default and infrastructureThe House plans a vote Thursday on the infrastructure bill, while the Senate seeks to fund the government and lift the debt ceiling. Why does this headline not reflect appropriately the situation? Congress will be bracing for a GOP-led government shutdown. Democrats have no intention of shutting down the Government. Republicans have stooped so far as to not even paying the bills they created. Wow!! The 1st infrastructure bill which does real infrastructure is the only one that needs to be passed
