There are about 134,000 claimants of universal credit in NI - but a £20 a week top up has ended.

The £20 top-up - which Chancellor Rishi Sunak said was only a temporary measure to help people through the pandemic - was extended by six months in March, but MPs across the political spectrum, along with charities and campaigners, have called for it to continue beyond the autumn.

"They're taking this £20 away at the worst possible time, they should not be removing it at all, they should make it permanent," she told BBC Radio Ulster's Good Morning Ulster programme. She said she hoped the government would reconsider its decision and that the NI Assembly "step up and help the people of Northern Ireland".

"In the middle of the pandemic we had fed 6,000 people, but to date it is 12,000 people - that gives you some indication about the scale," she said. According to the charity Save the Children, between now and early November, more than 83,000 children in over 44,000 households in Northern Ireland will be affected by having universal credit payments reduced by £87 per month or £1,040 a year.

The good news this week doesn't come from the straw man who missed his chance While dying on stage doing his stand up sketch. Instead it came from russia's putin who put some pennies back in your pocket by helping to ease the UKs great gas rip off crises !?

People need to fear about being panicked by the scaremongering media! They will just need to budget on what they had before the temporary uplift was given! I expect though that most will over spend on unnecessary items at Christmas that they don’t really need!

My mum bought me up on my own in the 80s. She suffered from chrons disease and eventually bowel cancer. She didn’t get any hand outs so she worked and worked hard as a trained nurse. What has this country become. Thanks Mr Blair !!

It was always going to be temporary, so why didn't they treat it as such? They didn't have it before. I was furloughed for nearly 8 months and lost 20% of my earnings that time. I had to tighten my belt to cope with the money I was missing in my wages. Bills still paid.

people acting all shocked that this is something new. quit the fake outrage. The government has said the universal credit was temporary. you have all known this as it was set in march 2020. you have had a year and a half to come up with a plan for when it stops. Quit moaning

unless you haven't been in the position yourself on UC before and know the struggle then you really have no say on this matter.

Where do these people think where the money comes from to substantiate this credit? It is taxpayers money not governments as a pensioner I am still paying a lot in taxes which I believe that I should not have to pay

What about all those on benefits, ESA, invalidity or pensions etc that did not get the temporary uplift

Not sure UC is designed to pay for Piano Lessons?

Didn't they say over and over again it was only temporary which means sooner or later it would come to a end
