Online shopping has turned the Black Friday sales centred around the Thanksgiving holiday period into a global scavenger hunt for the best buys, and Australians are expected to be elbowing their way into the event with increased enthusiasm following the lockdown restraints of COVID-19.
“You can expect people to be more excited and more experimental with their online purchases,” said Dr Kate Sala, School of Fashion and Textile, RMIT. “After lockdown people are far more literate with digital interfaces and far more confident with online shopping.” With lockdown having lifted digital shopping skills, retailers are ready for greater interest in the Black Friday sales kicking off November 22.
A group of retailers is pushing back against the Black Friday monolith to highlight the environmental impact of filling your online checkout. “Coming out of lockdown there will be shoppers who have been reminded about the importance of shopping local and are more interested in supporting people than slashing prices,” Sala said.
