Where do we really stand with our cost of living? Are prices really going up? Here's a quick stocktake

In Australian politics, no-one ever lost an election by talking about keeping a lid on the cost of living, and all the signs point to another “hip-pocket giveaway” election this year.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison mentioned electricity prices no less than three times in his National Press Club speech last week because they have dropped 8 per cent over the past two years, after a decade of regular increases. The cost of both the National Broadband Network and mobile phone plans dropped last year on a “feature-adjusted” basis,. That means we are paying less for the same plan inclusions.
