The MTA admits it is having difficulty getting major drug store chains to prominently display the OMNY cards on gift card racks. In some cases, boxes of OMNY cards are sitting unopened in backrooms, said Sarah Meyer, MTA chief customer officer.

, there have been 4,367 OMNY cards sold across 460 different retail locations in the city, according to MTA spokesperson Eugene Resnick. Resnick added that another 54 locations have been refilling cards.

Meyer, MTA’s chief customer officer, said one challenge is teaching retail employees how to refill cards that have already been purchased. At a Walgreens on Atlantic Avenue in downtown Brooklyn, there was exactly one OMNY card left on the shelf. The package pried open as if someone just wanted to have a look.Stephen Nessen / Gothamist

. At the location on Willoughby Street in downtown Brooklyn, clerk Priscilla Martin said she sells about four OMNY cards a week.

If there’s a way for the MTA to screw up, they always find it.

Great idea

Just now: Union sq MTA teller, doesn’t sell them. Checked the OMNY website where to go. Went to 4th and 12th st 7eleven,l they don’t have them (and “we keep ordering them”), then cvs at 20 university place says they never had them and “the whole system doesn’t make sense.”

Are city workers able to use transit benefits cards to purchase omny cards? I use mine to buy Metro Cards but it can’t be used for anything else as far as I know.

I tried to buy one at my local Duane reade and when I tried to purchase it at the counter the register rang up as 'unable to sell'

S_Nessen Correction: People can use an *NFC-enabled* (aka contactless) credit or debit card. Nearly all credit cards have had EMV chips for several years now. NFC/contactless, however, is more mixed. Your article should be clearer/more precise on this point.

I bought mine at 7-Eleven a few months ago. It’s already a vast improvement on the MetroCard!

Oh I didn’t know they had added OMNY to busses too!

They should sell them at the stations.

I found some at a Walgreens in South Orange….New Jersey

Maybe they think it Has something to do with Omicron

Probably because 99.9% of the NYC population has something called a “cellular telephone” which allows you to swipe through using said cellular phone as your metro card

Perhaps a better name would have helped. I am a NYer, and I had to think about that one for a sec.
