According to the letter, which City Press has seen, the alleged slanderous and defamatory statements were made by a department representative during testimony in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court in 2018.
“Mr Andries Schlemmer, acting on behalf of DESTEA, while cross-examined, stated that our client is a wildlife smuggler who distributes animals and their derivates,” read the letter.The Free State department spokesperson, Tiisetso Makhele, confirmed receipt of the letter, however, he declined to comment on the matter. “Please note that this matter is to be ventilated in the courts and DESTEA is therefore not in a position to respond at the present stage.
On February 22 2018, wildlife traders were engaged in a criminal case in the Free State on moving wildlife without the prerequisite documentation. Schlemmer provided a description of events in his capacity as an investigator in the department, on how wildlife was illegally transported from one area to another.
According to the defamation letter, Schlemmer testified that traders who smuggled wildlife in the area were Shorty Durand, Van der Westhuizen and Marnus Steyl.
