Ontario budget promises $1B boost to home care and a tax credit to keep seniors in their homes longer. But critics say many low-income seniors can’t afford the expenses the tax credit covers.

The “seniors care at home” tax credit is for Ontarians age 70 and older and would allow them to get up to 25 per cent of their money back on claimable expenses to a maximum of $6,000, meaning the payouts would be $1,500 or less.

But critics said the plan falls short of what’s needed because low-income seniors can’t afford many of the expenses it covers and, even if they can, the payouts diminish as family net income rises. The Progressive Conservative government has budgeted $110 million for the income tax credit it estimates will help about 200,000 seniors with family net incomes below $65,000.
