Former Education Department general counsel warned it is ‘doubtful’ courts would accept Biden canceling debt for all student borrowers
Navient’s recent $1.7 billion settlement will erase student debt for about 66,000 borrowers. WSJ’s Josh Mitchell breaks down the settlement and explains which borrowers will receive debt relief. Photo: StoryblocksPresident Biden would be on shaky legal ground if he were to pursue broad-based student debt cancellation by executive action, President Barack Obama’s former top Education Department lawyer wrote in a legal analysis.
Mr. Biden is seriously considering canceling some debt for certain borrowers, even as legal experts have long debated whether the president has the authority to take such a step.
No wonder your country is imploding- your people abandoned while billions are spent on proxy wars. Disgusting
This is absolute bullshit. The Higher Education Act gives them authority to forgive the principals. Also, who has standing to sue? Congress can impeach, but Dems control it.
Ya think…
The legality of this stunt was dubious from the start.
It also isn't feasible, given the current education system. How would tuitions be funded moving forward? Banks would have a hard time writing loans they know their customers have no intention to pay back.
