At some point it gets hard to ask voters to channel their anxieties into maintaining the status quo that’s worrying them. | OPINION by Waleed Aly auspol ausvotes

Of all the election campaigns I’ve seen, the one that still makes me marvel most is 2004. This was three years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and in the depths of the subsequent Iraq war. By this stage, it had become clear that the pretext for the war – that Iraq hadthat could fall into terrorists’ hands – was false. That was not a particular revelation, either.

Sorry, what? Interest rates? This election will be about interest rates? Who was talking about interest rates? It was like Howard was phoning in from a completely different planet. It was a political masterclass. Howard had taken his weakness – trust – and made it his strength by redefining it. Trust suddenly had nothing to do with honesty, and everything to do with economic results. It didn’t even matter if the economic results in question weren’t under his control.

It’s true that the government’s election-year splurge only makes the problem worse by driving inflation at a time when inflation is taking off, but it’s also true that Labor has an impressive splurge of its own. In this respect at least there really is a similarity to the 2007 rate rise, where the Reserve Bank took a veiled swipe at both major parties for their spending promises.

It would be great if the media actually ditched the OPINION pieces by journalists who think they are rocks stars, and get back to reporting on news and facts. It's called a newspaper for a reason. We all opine, and these journalists should just use Twitter like everyone else.
