SALT LAKE CITY — In a letter addressed to President Joe Biden, Utah's Governor Spencer Cox, along with 21 other governors across the nation, called on the student loan forgiveness plan to be withdrawn"immediately."
Biden announced his plan at the end of August to forgive up to $20,000 worth of student loan debt for borrowers who received Pell Grants and up to $10,000 for students who did not receive Pell Grants. Governors from Utah, Iowa, Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming states signed a joint letter, dated Monday, opposing the plan.
They say the debt relief will harm lower-income families and make problems even worse for future students. "A high-cost degree is not the key to unlocking the American Dream—hard work and personal responsibility is," the letter says in part."For many borrowers, they worked hard, made sacrifices, and paid off their debt. For many others, they chose hard work and a paycheck rather than more school and a loan. Americans who did not choose to take out student loans themselves should certainly not be forced to pay for the student loans of others.
Since only congress can appropriate the purse the whole program is a farce. The real goal is for the democrats to entice the republicans to fight the fictional program and then the democrats will blame the republicans to gain votes… who is the fool here
When will he sign the bill to retro pay veteran windows their benefits due. My aunt was cheated out of $1300 a month for 25 years and counting in widow’s benefits along with millions of other veteran widows. Why not pay them what is due in full and not do some stupid step program

Please read the entire bill loan forgiveness is not the tax payers paying the entire loan. It applies to the predatory lenders excessive rate increases. If you borrowed $100 from a loan shark at 100% interest every day until you pay him back. The interest is what is forgiven

I’d rather pay for student loan forgiveness than make up for tax breaks given to the rich. As an American I support student loan forgiveness.

Someone else in the comments mentioned this govcox but I'd like to reiterate it, I had ONE child, he went to public school in the Canyons SD, on my property tax I STILL pay not only for Canyons but Jordan SD therefore subsiding those who have 1-10 kids in the public schools. 1/
govcox imagine a world with free or at least affordable higher education, a healthcare system that people could actually afford/use & equal rights for every person, a world where kids didn't go hungry & veterans weren't homeless either. Seems like a religious wish list to me.

If any one thing can be said to have made the biggest difference in modern human history it is education/learning. We should be funding education as a top priority if the US wants to stay afloat. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant and dragging us all down.

This is ridiculously unAmerican. People who didn't buy homes were forced to bail out mortgage lenders, weren't they? People who didn't go around spreading covid sure have had to pay the bills for those who did, considering ins & write offs went up, due to it.

Hey Cox, I didn't vote to give the 1% a tax cut either, but I'm paying for it. I took out loans when I went to college 30 years ago. I paid them off. I support the student loan forgiveness.
Americans have debt forced on them every which way and twice on Sunday, from the day they're born, especially if born into a lower social strata, so it's high time we tilt the balance towards more debt forgiveness.
More work on getting Utah gas prices down to the nat'l average, GovCox, and less whining about your feelings of life being 'unfair'.

I paid my loans off but don’t begrudge those who got assistance because, unlike Cox, I understand the difficulty that puts on people & families. Thankfully, a broad majority of Americans support the debt relief efforts unlike Utah pols who believe we should only help rich donors.

Sorry, that is a very short sighted argument. Feds hand out money to low tax red states for any emergency or problem and I pay for that too, so why should I?

Biden isn't going to cave. I didn't get any money from the govt. during the pandemic and won't get any of this money for the student loans. Yet, I'm grateful those who need it are getting it. Be better, SpencerJCox .
