Gov. Spencer Cox argues that the Biden administration’s plan is a way to use every American’s tax dollars to pay for the education of a handful of people.

The letter asks the Biden administration to withdraw the student loan plan immediately.

The GOP governors argue the Biden administration’s plan is a way to use every American’s tax dollars to pay for the education of a handful of people. The letter argues that those with the most debt have advanced degrees and higher wages, meaning the taxes from lower-income workers would be paying off “the master’s and doctorate degrees of high salaried lawyers, doctors, and professors.”

“Only 16-17 percent of Americans have federal student loan debt, and yet, your plan will require their debts be redistributed and paid by the vast majority of taxpayers,” the letter to Biden reads. “Shifting the burden of debt from the wealthy to working Americans has a regressive impact that harms lower income families.”

When reached for comment, Jennifer Napier-Pearce, communications director and senior advisor in the Cox administration, said the governor could not be reached because he is traveling overseas and referred The Salt Lake Tribune to the language in the letter. Cox’s weekly schedule indicates he is in the Middle East this week as part of a trade mission with World Trade Center Utah. He visited Israel on Monday,

Gee, Governor. Isn't that what public education is? Remember that whole 'value of an educated citizenry ' thing that Jefferson pushed?

Couldn't it be argued that ever since the government began the FASFA program, that a hand full of people paid a defacto tax (interest on student loans) to keep the American people's taxes lower?

He’s right

Don't know about you but I can't fit a few million people in my hands.

we can't haf some commie sistem bean payed buy my tax dolars...tayk that tweetter....

Isn’t that the basis of public education? We all pay for education. You know, the greater good thing.

Perhaps if the GOP would think of these things as an investment, they could see there is an ROI for society AND our tax dollars.

Since when do we get a say in how our tax dollars are spent? I would much rather mine go toward relieving student debt than toward turning Palestinian children into piles of ash.

This effing guy

The Constitution describes the purpose of government as providing for the common defense and promoting the general welfare. Tuition relief for 300k Utah citizens seems only fair when you consider how states have failed to fund higher education resulting in higher tuition.

I would rather pay for student education than upgrades to your home!

I want to cut out of my federal taxes any $ going to the bloated defense budget and military industrial complex. Line item shift some of that over to investments in education and job training and we’re 😎

We should end the federal & state subsidy of water resources with which Cox irrigates his alfalfa. Let's be consistent GovCox/SpencerJCox; we should not use every American's tax dollars to pay for the irrational & environmentally destructive act of farming in the West utpol

He’s also been heard telling people if GOP can keep gas prices high that will help candidates. I’ve lost all respect for Cox. He had an opportunity to work across alparties and he lied and slid right into GOP party line

Next can we remove property taxes collected for public education? We don’t need no more learnin.

This makes me feel ill. Did all the Republicans sign a letter when trump gave billions to corps.& the ultra-wealthy and raised taxes on everyone else? I went to the University when it was $250/quarter. You people have no idea what people have gone through since. And don't care.

If this is the best they can come up with, then it's pretty clear Biden's doing a good job.

Booooooooo

300,000 utah citizens is more than a handful, it’s a sizable voting number VoteBlueIn2022

It’s ok to give RICH people a trillion dollar tax break though… but not middle class students…

Ok so if I don’t have children I shouldn’t have to pay taxes to educate other peoples children? Or do we agree a educated society is better for society as a whole and worth the investment

300k in Utah alone 🤡

Republicans are hostile to education. That is why they have been cutting education budgets for decades. Years of cuts to state universities is one of the reasons why college tuition is so high now.

He's not using our tax dollars. He's using the interest paid by the borrowers.

Police disproportionately help rich property owners. Does he want to defund them?

I’d rather have a few individuals get some relief than corporations getting all my tax dollars

We could make college free for everyone.

So, is he proposing shuttering Utah's public school system?

I want all child tax credits to stop and all my property tax refunded that pays for the the schools. My kid has graduated why should I have to pay for others. I don’t need fob pay for all the kids in this state…..

That's... that's literally why people pay taxes: so that people who couldn't otherwise afford education can still access it! Geez...

Spencer Cox joined nearly half of the governors across the nation on Monday in penning a letter to President Joe Biden, denouncing his student loan forgiveness plan. Hmmm. I wonder why. Silver spoon kid says what? Curballl McOilBribes is right, we should be spending that money on corporate/billionaire tax breaks and overpriced underperforming military equipment no one asked for. The elite are saying those who make under $125k are the 'elite few'? 🤣😂🤣😂

Should President Joe Biden withdraw his student loan forgiveness plan? Here’s what Gov. Cox thinks.President Joe Biden’s studentloanforgiveness program could benefit around 300,000 Utahns. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox joined 21 other Republican governors in signing a letter in opposition to the plan. At the expense of all the rest. There is no such thing as loan “forgiveness”, just transferring that debt to those who did not sign up for it. Coxsucker loves to step & fetch for his corporate masters. 😡
