Godongwana said the government has no choice but to take on the power utility's debt.
"I don't have a choice. I'm between a rock and a hard place. If Eskom defaults, I've provided guarantees to Eskom of almost R350 billion," said Godongwana. Part of that has to do with the government's start-and-stop stance towards the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme . The government delayed signing power purchase agreements with independent power producers in 2016 and only finalised that in 2018.
"Any mention of those is attacked by the green energy groups and the environmentalists," he said, pointing out that SA's integrated resource plan of 2019 spoke about all those and was accepted as the country's energy policy. He said Mantashe needs to take"bold enough" decisions to get SA to a point where it can achieve reliable electricity supply.
_Business I would suggest rather using a per unit measurement system for electricity output and reliability against input costs such as generation costs and overheads…
_Business It's CR move... Pay off debts then sell for R51... The next thing you will hear from now is partners for nuclear and Gas... Instead of engaging Univ to look at their curriculum and invest on specific education for power generation than hire right skills into eskom where....
_Business Some conditions should be to reduce staff compliment by 20% secondly get rid of corrupt staff & contractors involved with irregular practice
_Business Oi vay! Eskom can't get coal power to work properly now you want them to add gas & nuclear.
_Business Here we go again. Goebitnmoneybak thw ANC can steal it. Again.
_Business Putin has made a phone call again
_Business I remember how JZ was fiercely fought coz of the Russian nuclear 1
_Business Lol, heard that one before
_Business Yesssss,add more debt. Yesssss.
_Business If these dudes failed at lighting a fire under coal, I would prefer they stay away from nuclear.😂🤣
_Business What gas? We don't want gas, we are fine with coal
_Business Nuclear power that will be ready in 10 to 15 years. If we are lucky. SA is screwed with leaders like that.
_Business Actually support Nuclear mix, problem is Eskom/ GOVT are not correct function to implement any medium or large project (coal, Nuke or other). Look MEDKUS, the most exp coal stations in the world and way past deadline. Would been cheaper to give every hshld a Solar/grid UPS
_Business Pls don't make your problems our, we pay our electricity bills upfront, when corruption takes our Money which was paid already, you do no concequences to the culprits, clean your house or step down!
_Business Useless Godongwana🚮🚮🚮
_Business And so the cANCer start licking their lips… I mean can you see the RBillions gonna be looted while building Nuclear if after 13yrs the Coal plants still aren’t fully functional 🤔
_Business Gas from where? & I remember the chattering classes howling at the moon when the previous admin tried to get 9 nuclear plants from Russia ... Guess now that Europe is doing it, we have the clear to do it too
_Business It's these 'Government conditions' that brought Eskom to it's knees in the first place. . . . . . just saying
_Business Invest with what capital? I thought you’re taking on their debt?
_Business Mmm I wonder which companies have given him a brown envelope! 🤔
_Business Interesting😹😹😹
_Business Lol ja right
_Business Look at the state of the Post Office. A government that hasn't figured out a postage stamp wants to start nuclear projects.
_Business Nuclear 🤣 gosh we back in the 1800s. When will this government make decisions for the future and not just for the present
