Daymed Private Hospital and its owner Dr Navind Dayanand have been charged with numerous instances of tax evasion and credit fraud

Four others, including his wife, Nerupa, who was the hospital's financial manager, a bookkeeper and two tax practitioners were also charged with offences.

“The company is charged with company income tax fraud, VAT fraud and pay as you earn credit fraud, with an actual prejudice of approximately R37 million to Sars [SA Revenue Serviceand potential prejudice of R498 million for PAYE,” said National Prosecuting Authority KwaZulu-Natal regional spokesperson, Natasha Kara.

She added that Dayanand was charged with personal income tax fraud and VAT fraud to the tune of R142 million, while the PAYE credit fraud was worth R637 million. Douglas Mpofu and Carla Louden are the accused tax practitioners, while Yagasami Perumal is the accused bookkeeper. All five were expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday, but only two appeared. The Dayanands “Warrants of arrest were issued and stayed till the court date. The matter was adjourned to February 24 next year for statements and for all the accused to appear in court,” added Kara.The NPA said that Nerupa was responsible for hiring and dismissing the accountants, while Mpofu and Louden submitted the tax returns on behalf of Daymed.
