The NHS is running a bank holiday-style service in many areas as picket lines are being set up at dozens of hospitals. The nurses' strike means thousands of appointments and operations have been cancelled. Latest:

These images show nurses on the picket line outside St Thomas' Hospital in London.

Speaking on why nursing staff were left with no option but to strike, Ms Kelly said:"Today is a solemn day but a historic day as we stand here along with tens of thousands of nursing staff on the picket lines in Northern Ireland, England and Wales to say that enough is enough. "Nurses can't even afford a meal. First-hand I have seen it, a nurse not even able to buy herself lunch. Nurses not being able to afford petrol in their tank because as a community matron you drive to people's houses to see them.

"We recognise the pressure on the NHS from the pandemic," he told our health correspondent Ashish Joshi. Regarding the day-to-day running of the health service, Mr Barclay said:"There are huge pressures, particularly in terms of the seven million people waiting for operations, and I don't want to take money away from those patients that are waiting for those operations. It's important we set up the new surgical hubs, we set up the new diagnostic centres. We announced another 19 last week. That's an extra one million tests and scans. We had 91 already prior to that.

"Certainly no plans to tell the independent body what to do," the prime minister's official spokesman said. Earlier, health minister Maria Caulfield told Sky News:"Absolutely we recognise that pay is an issue. That's why last year nurses were given a 3% pay rise when no other public sector were. It's worth taking a step back to ponder just how big a sea change this has been for monetary policy. Yes, interest rates have been higher than this as recently as 2008. But not since 1989 have interest rates increased this much in a single year. And given those households with mortgages today are considerably more indebted than back then, the net effect of these changes could be even tougher.

Thanks a lot !

Crybabys get off your backsides and get back to work.

We are all exhausted but hey that happens many many people feel the same and many worked throughout pandemic and can’t hold the country to ransome

Some cuts don't heal, like a fake vagina! 🤣

Get this right, operations and appointments are being cancelled because of lack of resources, not the nurses protests. Our local hospital has an embargo on all non emergency operations until February! My wife has had surgery cancelled twice because no beds! nhscrisis

Awful. Middle of a cold snap and the plebs still have to suffer because of these greedy people. After several years of bending over backwards for them and they still want more.
