” collected $134 million in its North American box office debut, affirming the public’s interest in Pandora and providing a needed boost to beleaguered movie theaters.
As the sequel to the highest-grossing move in history, Hollywood has some pretty high expectations for “The Way of Water,” which is Cameron’s first film to clear $100 million in a single weekend. The first “Avatar” opened in 2009 with $77 million domestically, a decent start but hardly one for the record books. But the film enjoyed unparalleled staying power, holding the No. 1 spot for seven weeks in a row and kept drawing audiences for months.
Turnout for “Avatar 2” was especially strong on Imax and 3D screens, with 62% of ticket sales coming from premium formats. Globally, the film made $48.8 million from Imax alone, registering as the company’s second-biggest weekend ever and highest December opening in history.
The first one didn’t open huge either….people just kept going back over and over to see the CGI. Not sure that’ll happen again this time. It’ll hit a billion worldwide but not sure how much higher beyond that.
Only way to watch it

Only right way to watch it
My whole family loved it. Highly recommend!
This is a little suspicious. I was at the Chinese Theatre in LA when it opened & there were no lines and the ushers told me there were lots of available seating and sales weren't very strong although they expected more on Saturday Maybe other parts of the country it's popular?
Epic win for cinema and James Cameron.
Avatar 2 has long leg Doing very well with Imax,3d or premium screening…..

Not as high as expected but still super impressive
robertliefeld Disney has a brand issue. It's obvious. It's glaringly obvious.
That is losing money. 134 M only in USA : Failure.
