Around 120,000 Universal Credit claimants who work part time will have to show that they are actively looking for more or better paid work, or face sanctions

. The rule change this month will require people working 15 hours or less at minimum wage to demonstrate they are job hunting, up from 12 hours.

Certain groups will be exempt from the sanctions, including those who are unable to work because of long-term sickness or a disability and those who are over the state pension age.Currently, someone who is single, employed and earns more than £494 a month is not required to look for work. The same applies to couples who earn over £782 between them.

Anyone who is unsure of how the new rules may affect them can speak to their work coach or get advice from a charity like Turn2Us. They have a free number you can call on 0808 802 2000.
