Data obtained by theipaper shows that barely any applications by debt agents on behalf of energy firms are refused, leaving families helpless to stop themselves facing higher bills or the threat of being cut off 🔎 deankirby_ reports:

More than 7,600 were withdrawn by the firms and 1,557 applications were entered in error.

With bills rising at a rapid rate, paying for energy in real-time means customers’ payments are heaviest in the coldest months and cannot be spread out across the year. Most people will be unaware that smart meters installed in home to help people save money on their bills can be flipped remotely to prepayment without the need for a warrant.

“Suppliers must follow strict rules when installing prepayment meters and need to have exhausted all other options, particularly when a warrant is required to enter a vulnerable customer’s home. “This practice of bulk approving warrants runs contrary to fair justice and the Government must launch a full inquiry into what has happened, the evidence energy firms offered to courts and the role of magistrates in enabling this scandal to take place.”

In a letter to the Justice Committee, Mr Freer said that while HM Courts and Tribunal Service has no data on the number of those contested hearings, “we know from experience that the proportion is low”.
