How will the underlying loans be repaid if the asset is worthless? And if the asset itself creates a massive environmental and human cost? Did the Chinese firms need to borrow USD to make these construction loans? Will those $ loans be repaid?
These countries should have asked the US about the quality of typical Chinese products. They might not have been so eager to commit to huge debt repayment while granting all that Chinese money back to Chinese companies to fulfill the work.

I use to source millions of dollars with Chinese factories. They never knew how to do anything right.
When we went to China in 2006, they were rapidly building low quality buildings for their own people to prep for the Olympics. Do they know quality, I don’t know, but they do know grift and graft better than most.
