The debate around raising the debt ceiling sounds eerily similar: Newly elected House Republicans, eager to confront the Democratic president in the White House, refused to raise the debt limit without cuts to federal spending.

Raising the nation’s debt ceiling had been a routine matter historically, a final task after Congress had authorized federal spending and appropriated the money needed to pay for the country's various programs and services.Saying Americans were “taxed enough already,” the tea party House Republicans arrived promising to slash federal spending, using the debt ceiling vote as their political leverage.

Spooked by the political crisis in Washington, the credit markets downgraded the nation’s credit ranking for the first time, upping the costs of future borrowing. Biden is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Democratic congressional leaders at the White House and is planning to invite McCarthy in the future.

In pushing McCarthy to drive a hard bargain in debt talks, House Republicans may be taking a lesson from the tea party era that one way to force their leadership's hand is to threaten his ouster if he caves.

Is the White House hosting debt ceiling talks with McCarthy or not?Kevin McCarthy and the White House can't even agree on whether they're poised to have debt ceiling negotiations, but the truth is plain. MaddowBlog McCarthy needs to listen to his orange daddy. No cuts to Social Security or Medicare. MaddowBlog The only harm is in my wallet which Biden has obliterated by his incompetent leadership devastating policies and bills so huge my grandkids will pay for them. Budrn has hurt the people and devastated our Country and our economy. And u talk about Congress. U R part of the problem MaddowBlog Our Congress needs to declare ANTIFA and BLM as Domestic Terrorist. This will give federal Authority to shut them down when they try to burn loot and assault our Cities as well as make it illegal for self proclaimed socialist like George Soros to fund their anarchy.

Schumer prods House GOP to reveal spending cuts they want in exchange for debt limit hikeSenate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer on Monday dared House Republicans to make public the spending cuts they want to see implemented in exchange for helping raise the federal debt ceiling. How about the Dems lay out their spending priorities when the debt ceiling isn’t lifted. Shutting down the ATF is a good start. $1.7 Trillion that Democrats passed just last month. For starters. Then all that DEI and CRT crap in our schools. Then anything related to “COVID relief” or vaccines.
