When a postgraduate student from Wits University, Papama Meleni, was introduced to health economics, she thought she would make a difference in the health sector. However, her dreams were dashed as she could not register for this academic year

because she owes the institution R162 000.

“Wits University introduced the programme, and I learnt that health economists were imported from overseas. A health economist uses economic theory to make decisions with limited resources within the health sector. For example, we do cost-effective analysis for diseases and the cost behind introducing a new vaccine. We draw up the costs and work with people in the health sector to find information,” she said.

I remember that year, I submitted my essay just 15 minutes before the closing time. I was truly surprised when I received an email from Nedbank saying I had made it to the finalists. Unfortunately, I didn’t win.
