'At his best, Carter was able to take innovative stands on perplexing issues in ways that produced lasting improvement,' Michael Barone writes.

That was not all that separated them, either. Carter once made the point that he had never met a Democratic president, whereas Roosevelt met every Democratic president who was alive during his lifetime except for Jimmy Carter.

The problems he faced, campaigning in 1975 and 1976 and taking office in 1977, have a familiar ring today. Inflation had been raging on and occasionally off during the decade in ways the conventional economists of the day could not explain or remedy. The nation was still reeling from a military defeat in a protracted war.

This is partly because the two parties’ nominees, incumbent President Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, were from their party’s respective historic heartlands — outstate Michigan, south Georgia — which had both been trending the other way in the turbulent 1960s and 1970s. Ford’s old congressional district, after he became vice president, elected a Democrat.

It also showed how Jimmy Carter was capable of learning from experience, which he proceeded to do as president. He absorbed the lessons of Ralph Nader and free market economists and supported deregulation of airlines, trucking, and freight railroads, lowering costs enormously for consumers permanently.,” but after the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, he said his “opinion of the Russians has changed more drastically in the last week than even the previous two and a half years.

Jimmy is a very nice guy with a good heart. Terrible president, but great man.

🤡

At his worse, he was the worst president until Biden.

The article only says Carter discovered he was wrong on inflation and communism and changed course. What’s so commendable about that? I remember his presidency as a series of bungled disasters. He recognized Pol Pot!

Until Biden, Carter was the worst President in US history

No

That’s why he was a one term president because he made improvements 😂😂😂😂

Lasting improvements. That's funny.

When? Inflation rate in 1976 5.7%, in 1979 11.5%,

Pres Carter was smart enough to invest in stealth tech and cruise missiles. He inherited an econ mess from Ford, but prob made it worse. He allowed terrorists to destabilize the mid east. He continued to opine about things that were out of line long after he left office. Grade? D

Carter was an important POTUS. At a time when few could trust any politician, a man who's character was beyond question became POTUS. He wasn't an effective President, and most of his policies were failures. But his folksy, honest manner was exactly what was needed at the time.

I never agreed with him but at least he isn’t a corrupt communist like Biden.

I do not doubt for an instant that Jimmy Carter's life was directed by his Christian faith and what he thought God was telling him to do. Maybe it was or was not the politically astute direction to take, but I respect him all the more for taking the direction he did.

Bullshit

Good guy, but he was the worst President in modern history… then Biden happened… BidenWorstPresidentEver
