Godongwana offers to scrap two thirds of Eskom's debt if it meets strict conditions, increases public debt

Eskom will receive the much-needed respite as the National Treasury takes R254 billion of Eskom’s debt to the sovereign balance sheet.

These advances will cover capital and interest payments as they fall due and may only be used for that purpose. The company to focus on maintenance of the existing generation fleet to improve the availability of electricity. And that Eskom implements the recommendations from an international consortium appointed by the National Treasury to review all the utility’s coal-fired power stations and advise on operational improvements.Eskom has buckled under the pressure of a growing population and economy as well as its old coal-fired power stations that have not been maintained properly.
