Interest is building in using solar geoengineering to combat climate warming, but experts warn it could have broad—and inequitable—impacts

CLIMATEWIRE | Radical climate interventions — like blocking the sun's rays — could alter the world's weather patterns, potentially benefiting some regions of the world and harming others.

Climate scientists are, by and large, wary of such intervention. While limiting the amount of sunlight that reaches the Earth could rapidly cool the planet, they say, such efforts wouldn't address ocean acidification and other harms associated with burning fossil fuels, the primary cause of global warming.

The aim, she said, is to advocate that "the research actually addresses the risks and uncertainties and the potential environmental, social and economic and other risks that may result from deployment in these technologies." Scientists and others who support more independent research say they don’t see SRM as a climate fix, nor do they support its deployment given how little is currently known about its impacts. They argue that more research is needed to understand how or even if it can be implemented safely — and that means taking a more inclusive approach to SRM studies.

That threatens to exacerbate the growing divide between the wealthy countries that have contributed most of the emissions warming the planet and the poorer ones forced to bear the resulting impacts in the form of more extreme storms, heat, droughts and rising seas. Wealthy philanthropists have also expressed support for SRM. That has raised concerns among experts that without international regulations governing the practice, anyone with enough money could unilaterally deploy it — with potentially grave consequences.

More people from more places It’s still too early to consider those implications, experts say. And it may never get to that point. But it really comes down to money, with most research in the Global South dependent on philanthropic funding.

Panels and wind power cannot hurt for now.

UndercoverMoth9 I'm waiting for the punchline...

Three words for you people: Silicon Valley Bank Stop the insanity.

ALL 'scientific' interventions are 'inequitable' Just like - healthcare, wealth creation, resource utilization, alcohol consumption, development, modes of transportation, and on and on and on Got an actual point?

1816. The year without a summer. Look it up. 🥶

Lemme know when you can predict the weather correctly first

Let’s do it and see what happens.

The climate hysteria has to stop . CO2 levels do not effect climate.

You have become a damn joke.

This is literal insanity and should be stopped by any means

You need to change your Twitter Handle: You're no longer Scientific America at best you are Pandering Propagandist

😖🤮 Scientific American used to be a very respectable publication. Oh, I mourn your descent into this sickness….

'without international regulations governing the practice, anyone with enough money could unilaterally deploy it — with potentially grave consequences.' By anyone I assume they mean SPECTRE.

At it again?

Leave the sun alone

Isn't all 'that' just a conspiracy theory, like we've been told for decades? TheBigReveal ComingOut IfBSHadATwitterAccount

Imagine the insane level of arrogance to 1) think you can do something like this and 2) take it upon yourself to do something like this, with implications for the entire planet, if it were to actually work somehow.

Science based on brain aids 👆

What could possibly go wrong?

😆 😆 😆

I love parody accounts.

What a sad joke the once-mighty Scientific American has degenerated into.

'Experts' 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Madness.

If your publication is named 'Scientific American,' you should really stop using non-scientific words such as 'equitable.'

Hahaha.

Why dont you go protest China? If you dont call them out, it just proves your insincerity

so sunlight is.... racist?

The majority of earths climate has been hothouse earth. The majority of species existed in hothouse earth. The earth will endure. Mankind is an ice age species. We won’t.

I mean.. that's just common sense. Why is this even considered?

The Sun laughs at your feeble attempts to control her! 🤣

The problem is not the sun, but the excess heat created by 8 billion humans, their cities & activities here on Earth: burning wood/coal; nuclear power plants expel heated water into rivers; even 'green' electricity used to power technology ultimately creates waste heat.

nah. I'm sure it will be fine.

Geoengineering our home planet is the pinnacle of hubris. If we can't predict weather accurately 10 years in advance, we should not try any long acting interventions.

We must consult Harry and Meagan. They represent the oppressed very well.

It's been happening for decades.

If equity is the goal, we should just detonate all the nuclear weapons everywhere. Then everyone can be equally dead all at once.

💙🇺🇸🇺🇦

Oh there’s one of the magic political words smuggled in there… “inequitable”. Because oppression or something. You’re a joke, SciAm. How about a name change. Science is no longer the driving factor in your content.

This is the one area where we can begin to equally balance & stabilize. It's going to take the attitude & behavior of strength & forward thinking, for the benefit of all, to navigate this shifting energy to make that first step. The future is up to all of us, we must comply.✌️

Or we could just stop polluting, instead of “let’s let rich corporations keep polluting and we will spend public money on massive projects to compensate.”

Ahhhh, the hubris... Absolutely no one that is sane wants the sun blocked out from earth

Whatever happened to solar everything, cars running on H2O & flying cars? I think the technology has been kept undercover because there's not so much money in it for the big corporations & the politicians they control!

The Earth is cooling since 2015 again. Do you have any dignity left, or you just follow the party line?

The most important finding on the oak island treasure hunt is that the atlantic was two feet lower in 1650. Plymouth rock has been moved inland twice

We're not even close to becoming a Type I civilization.

How about slathering the planet with some 16spf tanning oil? Make the world smell like a coconut.

Gosh, I thought it was climate change, now it’s back to climate (global) warming
