Canada’s long search is over. The so-called “special rapporteur” chosen to bring closure to our national nightmare of Chinese electoral interference is none other than 81-year-old former Governor General David Johnston. Johnston was recommended for appointment to Rideau Hall by Stephen Harper, and is generally the last governor general nobody had any strong feelings about.

A police report cleared the Marine, Jon Crump, from any assault charges on the grounds that he had merely intervened “to protect the women and to prevent the drunk, creepy, unwanted male from entering hotel room uninvited.” Brown has denied the allegations, but he’s still absent from the bench pending an investigation.
The Angus Reid Institute has just released its latest numbers on premier approval ratings, and it looks like Canadians are unusually happy with their provincial governments right now. There have been versions of these where only one or two first ministers have polled higher than 50 per cent. But in the March 2023 edition, all but three are enjoying “majority government re-election” levels of personal popularity.
