The demand from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy comes as the White House rejects talks on policies that could cut benefits to low-income Americans.

In recent weeks, the GOP has focused its attention on two anti-poverty programs: Medicaid, which enrolls the poorest families in health insurance, and food stamps, which provide grocery benefits to those in need. Top lawmakers including House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have publicly endorsed rules that could force some enrollees to find a job and work longer hours — or risk losing the government’s help entirely.

“I don’t think hard-working Americans should be paying for all the social services for people who could make a broader contribution and instead are couch potatoes,” Rep. Matt Gaetz , a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, said at a news conference last month. At the center of the standoff is the debt ceiling, the statutory limit on how much the U.S. government can borrow to pay its bills.

“The President has been clear that he will oppose policies that push Americans into poverty or cause them to lose health care,” White House spokesman Michael Kikukawa said in a statement. “That’s why he opposes Republican proposals that would take food assistance and Medicaid away from millions of people by adding burdensome, bureaucratic requirements.

Of course they do. GOPsucks VOTEBLUE

It should be a lifeline, not a lifestyle.

There are too many non-working low wage Americans, ie they are being paid too much, Not to Work!

This should get them all those votes they are going to need in 2024!

Good!!! So many people don't get married now because Medicaid will take out their trash while they run off and spend how they want too. It's not the taxpayers problem to be the parents. This country has turned into a big giant welfare mutt and the responsible people get to suffer

Instead of repealing the Trump tax cuts, Republicans are going to cut benefits across the board, and put them on the backs of middle America.

PA had work requirements for Medicaid. My friend Gina was a FREE caregiver for her elderly father AND was working 20 hours a week to keep her Medicaid. My advice: let your elderly relatives fend for themselves. If you lose your healthcare & have an accident, you're screwed.

I’m glad people don’t use critical thinking skills anymore. Yes, it would be awful to cut Medicaid for those who are elderly or disabled. We shouldn’t do that. But cuts ARE needed, or younger generations won’t have the benefits when it’s their turn.

Reflection

How about cut the military budget until they can show where the 61% they don't have a clue about went? Let's do that

Works requirements are a good thing. A no brainer if you will

Millions & millions of Americans haven't been born with a silver spoon either, GOP. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bring back the economy that brings jobs to the table ! The last 50 years changed the American economy . Don’t do things ass-backwards !

cutting benefits is the last thing we need right now! we need more benefits specifically in healthcare. im glad the white house rejected this and will continuing providing for the communities who need the subsidized care.

Seems pretty darned reasonable. Anyone else remember the WPA?

A good portion of people that are on Medicaid are unable to work. Elderly and disabled. This is insane.

GOP targets: The poor, women, people of color, trans people and their families, LGB+ people, .... Party that believes the US is a Christian nation. 🤦‍♂️

If you want benefits then go out there and earn them. It’s not everyone’s job to give them to you of their backs.

Those Trump tax cuts aren't paying for themselves after all. Shocker!

So Christian of the GQP. Make the poor more poor and sick.

SCOTUS has already ruled these unconstitutional. You’re wasting our time and money HouseGOP
