The national debt is not new, nor is it a recent development. It is the total amount of outstanding borrowed money the federal government has accumulated over time. The country first went into debt during the American Revolutionary War, amounting to $75 million by 1791, according to the Department of the Treasury. During the American Civil War, the debt increased by 4,000%, crossing the $1 billion threshold.

Since 1993, the national debt has increased by $25.73 trillion, with the largest single-term increases occurring under President Donald Trump in response to COVID-19 and President Barack Obama during the Great Recession. And while politicians in Washington begin debating the national debt once again, including raising or suspending the debt limit, it can be hard to fathom for regular people who have never seen $1 million, never mind $31.4 trillion, how large the national debt really is.to every citizen in the United States right now.for every taxpayer in the country, enough for each person to pay the average home value in Ohio.than the total value of all the goods and services produced and sold in Ohio.
