An estimated 700,000 UK households missed out or defaulted on a rent or mortgage payment last month as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

Around 2,000,000 households missed out or defaulted on at least one mortgage, rent, loan, credit card payment or bill in April.

Housing payments are proving to be a major sticking point for British households amid double-digit inflation Bills, especially energy and council tax, were the most commonly missed payment for the 2,000 people polled by Which?. 'People's finances have been under ratcheting pressure over the past two years and the high number of households missing essential payments - such as mortgage payments, bills and credit payments - shows little sign of falling,' she told Metro.co.uk.
