Garret Graves and Patrick McHenry , for another round of negotiations Wednesday afternoon, but Jean-Pierre opened Wednesday's briefing attacking Republicans for holding a vote to block Biden's student loan cancellation despite the current economic situation. She also alluded to comments made by Rep. Matt Gaetz about holding Democrats"hostage" throughout the debt proceedings.
"Just listen to members of the House Freedom Caucus. They've been very honest about this, and are now, openly, they're saying the quiet thing out loud, referring to the full faith and credit of the United States as a hostage," she stated while the White House displayed a graphic of Gaetz's comments behind her."I do want to be clear here averting default is the responsibility of every single member of Congress.
"If I've left you with any doubt about House Republicans' priorities, in just a few hours, all you've got to do is check it yourself, House Republicans will vote on a resolution to block President Biden's plan to provide up to $20,000 in student debt relief to borrowers who most of whom make less than $75,000 a year. The president's plan is a good one. It's a popular one, and it will help prevent borrowers from default when loan payments restart this summer.
She singled out Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Vern Buchanan for having business loans forgiven, all while reportedly voting yes on the deal. The White House also displayed a graphic outlining business loans forgiven for Gaetz and Reps. Kevin Hern and Brett Guthrie .You can watch Wednesday's briefing in full below.
