Sen. Chris Murphy highlighted Speaker Kevin McCarthy's past difficulty at locking down the gavel earlier this year and emphasized that the process could become time-consuming as the country barrels toward the June 5 so-called"X-date."“My worry is, there may still not be enough Republicans in the House to get this deal done,” Murphy said Sunday on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki.
Already, a handful of congressional Republicans have signaled opposition to the measure, contending that the party didn't get enough of what it wanted, particularly in terms of spending rollbacks. However, moderator Jen Psaki pointed to Sen. Mike Lee's threat to"use every procedural tool at my disposal to impede a debt-ceiling deal that doesn’t contain substantial spending and budgetary reforms."
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen most recently projected that the government could run out of cash to meet all its obligations as soon as June 5.
