McCarthy takes victory lap on debt deal

“Will this secure McCarthy standing as house speaker or do the opposite? Do you think this was one of the true victors in this process? Because I remind you that our president said on note terms to negotiate what he could spend and limit the deficit. He wanted no limits on what he could spend,” he said. “If you read the Washington Post over the weekend when he did an in-depth piece on what Speaker McCarthy told him point blank with his chief of staff at the White House.

President Joe Biden commended Speaker McCarthy on reaching an agreement saying, “I want to commend Speaker McCarthy. You know, he and I and our teams, we were able to get along and get things done,” Biden said in a speech. “We were straightforward with one another, completely honest with one another, respectful of one another. Both sides operated in good faith, both sides kept their word.
