A new bit of data only highlights how grave the problem might be.

including human beings. Tiny bits of plastic are in the things we ingest and the air we breath, so they enter our bodies and are left to just linger around. We’re only On Tuesday, Australian researchers published a study that found that the average human seems to inhale about 16.2 bits of microplastic every hour. When you tally that up, it comes out to the equivalent of inhaling a credit card-sized amount of plastic every week.

The new study isn’t necessarily a measure of how much microplastic actually gets breathed in. Instead, the team’s findings are based on the study of microplastic movements—the ways in which objects of different shapes and sizes move in the air under different kinds of breathing speeds. Microplastics tend to collect around the nasal cavity and the back of the throat , and it's the flow of breathing that determines whether these plastics will be deposited in these areas or not.
