Building society and bank bosses appeared before the Treasury Committee to address mounting concerns faced by struggling households

with lenders, and a new mortgage charter was agreed upon to support people. Lenders can offer borrowers a switch to interest-only payments for six months and an extension to their mortgage term to reduce their monthly payments, with the option to switch back within six months – both can be offered without an affordability check.

"So we would expect the numbers to be lower than the pandemic in terms of the payment holiday situation. If a customer can afford the increased payments, longer term, it's better for them because they will pay less interest, of course."
