A first year pupil's school supplies and other charges costs €972 on average

Irish parents are lying in bed awake at night worried about how they will meet rising back to school costs for their children.

Read more: Cost of living Ireland: Social welfare recipients warned after imminent payment date change One in four secondary school parents said they had to take out a loan or borrow from friends in order to meet back to school costs. Lots of parents provided feedback in the survey to express just how worried they were about meeting the costs. Lone parents in particular were struggling.

They called for free school books to be extended to secondary school and implement low-cost uniform options such as iron-on crests.
