Last year, just as Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng sent mortgage rates sky-high, the mortgage term ended. My mortgage lender, Nationwide, told me I still owed £80,000 – the original sum we had borrowed.

I also considered getting a lodger to help pay off my mortgage. But my home is pretty shabby as we haven’t spent any money on it over the years. After I had missed a few payments, out of the blue, I learned from a letter that Nationwide was planning to take me to court to repossess my home and evict me. I was absolutely distraught.
