Manchester City's continued hunt for further midfield reinforcements can only be bad news for Kalvin Phillips.
The club had pondered on whether to go like-for-like with a new winger, with Michael Olise on their radar, or sign another central attacking midfielder and utilise Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer on the right.Lucas Paqueta emerged as a surprising target but that option has since been taken off the table after the FA opened an investigation against the West Ham playmaker for potential betting rules breaches. Then the injury crisis began.
He swiftly got his wish as the following Monday it was revealed City had agreed a £55.5m deal with Rennes for the signing of winger Jeremy Doku, who should arrive in time to be in action on the weekend. Which might not happen. Both are integral to their clubs and it would take substantial bids in an increasingly inflated market for either Palace or Wolves to consider selling with the season underway and time running out to find replacements.
Considering that's the exact role Phillips was signed for a year ago suggests the club are looking to replace him. Guardiola already clearly doesn't trust Phillips enough to play him in meaningful games, he couldn't even start a Community Shield or UEFA Super Cup final, but he now seemingly sees the need to replace him.
Phillips took a brave position in choosing to stay and fight for his place but his future at the club now looks even bleaker.
