Treasurer Jim Chalmers has claimed Labor’s economic policies will be able to bring “almost half a trillion dollars” in savings to the federal budget over the next 40 years, despite a new Intergenerational Report (IGR) suggesting Australia could be weighed down by heavy debt in this four-decade period.

“It does seem like it’s also a bit of a frog in the boiling water just getting us ready for higher taxes, it does seem like this is an excuse for higher taxes,” she said.

However, the Treasurer has rejected proposing an overhaul to the taxation system but identified three key areas of tax reform that will set the stage for successive governments – the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax, multinational tax avoidance and concessions on higher super balances.

Australia’s ageing population to put pressure on tax base, says Jim ChalmersTreasurer Jim Chalmers says Australia’s ageing population will put pressure on the tax base. “As our population ages, this will create some challenges as well - challenges to our budget and challenges to growth,” he said at the National Press Club on Thursday. “As we age, there will be a smaller share of working-age people, putting pressure on our tax base. “At the same time as we face growing spending pressures, from the NDIS, aged care, health, defence and debt interest costs, which could keep us in deficit and put debt back on the rise.”
