'I couldn't pay my mortgage': Liz Cambage has revealed her battle to make ends meet after pushing her body past breaking point for club and country last year | geerob

Australian basketball star Liz Cambage has revealed her battle to make ends meet after pushing her body past breaking point for club and country last year.

"It's funny, we make all these sacrifices for our nation, but are we really getting looked after properly at the end of the day?" Cambage said."Something that needs to be better is making sure our athletes have the right insurance claims and are protected when we're going into major tournaments and representing our countries."ahead of International Women's Day, Cambage wondered why she and other players had to push themselves beyond their limits to earn a living.

Consolation: Cambage and Rebecca Cole look dejected after their Melbourne Boomers lost the WNBL grand final. One of the biggest names in world basketball, Cambage burst back into the public eye 18 months ago after returning from almost a year out of the game following the Rio Olympics. But after 11 months of continuous basketball and two seasons worth about $100,000 each, Cambage still felt compelled to top up her income with a seven-figure contract with the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association.

"I haven't made any money since September, which has been interesting. It's made me value the dollar a whole lot more. Everything's a learning lesson. The universe works in mysterious ways and she's taught me a big lesson."

geerob It must’ve only been the games she played for Australia that broke her. The games she played chasing big bucks were no sweat. Damn you national pride

PickandRollAU geerob What was she spending $$$ on then .

geerob Join the fucking club Liz 🤷🏼‍♀️

geerob

geerob Heres an idea. Get a fucking job and live within you means

geerob There are a lot of inspiring women in sport to be celebrated who don’t grumble much.

geerob Should learn to finance and stop worrying about image. typical

geerob We all feel for you Liz and those 6 figure contracts you are on!

geerob Life lessons. When you feel the pinch of a mortgage, and “battling to make ends meet”, take a breath, strip down, travel to Bali in a luxury resort and the universe will reveal your destiny in all its glory. Believe. Just Believe.

geerob So ahhhhh...

geerob

geerob Wow. One of the best basketball players in the world and this. Puts the gender pay gap in perspective

VinceRugari geerob She’s obnoxious.

geerob Who remembers when Liz got into trouble for going to a music festival instead of training? Who remembers when she got ejected from a game for bad behaviour? I like and admire Liz and this journalist’s writing but when are journos going to stop just reprinting agent’s PR?

geerob Maybe she lives out of her means

geerob Well i guess mortgage repayments are high in Toorak.

mrchrisnico geerob Waiting for andrewbogut to see this...

geerob Doesn't BasketballAus put its athletes through money management skills classes?

geerob Considering she still made more than double the median income, perhaps she wasn't smart when she purchased her place and got herself in too much debt! She honestly only has herself to blame.

geerob This idea that athletes sacrifice for country is complete crap. They do it for themselves. It’s a completely selfish endeavour.

geerob Jesus , so at a minimum she is ( was ) earning 200k a year more then double the average income. What you can’t rent out your probably many investment properties, sounds like she needs to put the China / Europe contracts first then country, not sure I feel real sorry for her

geerob I recall an article where she made $600k a season a couple of years ago in China, surely enough in the bank to cover mortgage repayments for a period of unemployment...

geerob Get to travel the world doing something you love, tough gig.

geerob FFS she made her choices, it’s just life! She needs to grow up!

geerob Always the victims, facilitated in their ‘woe is me’ addictions by the femherald.

geerob not special just to her Lots of Aussies hurting she is NOT special just cause she is a athlete auspol
