The Scottish Greens have announced plans to tackle the climate crisis, including giving local councils the power to charge polluting ships more and introducing a local tax to encourage landowners to manage their land in the public interest. They also aim to have at least four to six gigawatts of solar power by 2030.

In the run-up to conference, the Scottish Greens co-leaders had expressed concern over the announcement by Humza Yousaf that council tax will be frozen next year to help people with the cost of living crisis. HarvieHe said Green MSPs will secure agreement on a timetable and a way of working for this so that a “firm” alternative is put forward by the end of the current Scottish Parliamentary term in 2026., including giving local councils the powers to charge the “most polluting” ships more.

Plans are also under way to introduce a local tax which was proposed by Scotland’s Climate Assembly to encourage landowners to manage their land in the wider public interest. Slater announced the Scottish Government will begin to “explore” the idea and other policy options with the aim of restoring peatlands and creating more woodland.

Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse. So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.

The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started! We want our comments to be a lively and valuable part of our community - a place where readers can debate and engage with the most important local issues. The ability to comment on our stories is a privilege, not a right, however, and that privilege may be withdrawn if it is abused or misused.
