Donald Trump calls Kevin Rudd ‘nasty’ and says he ‘won’t be there long’ as Australia’s ambassador to USHe and other former senior diplomats are downplaying the implications of Trump describing Rudd as “nasty” and “not the brightest bulb” and suggesting a “hostile” Rudd could be removed, should Trump return to the White House.

Richardson said Trump’s declaration about Rudd potentially being forced out “if” hostile was “quite qualified”. “I think it’s very important that Australia’s senior diplomatic representatives, whether they be career diplomats or political appointees, should have bipartisan support because if they don’t, it diminishes their authority and therefore diminishes their influence in the country in which they are accredited,” Brandis told ABC Radio National. “And that is plainly not in the national interest.”

The manager of opposition business, Paul Fletcher, quoted a selection of Rudd’s criticisms of Trump, made while based in New York City with the Asia Society, in which he described the now presumptive Republican presidential nominee as “a destructive president” and “a traitor to the West”.
