Kate Garraway has recalled the moment she was told her husband Derek Draper had died - before his heart was restarted while she was at the other end of the phone having landed in Mexico where he had been receiving treatment at a brain cell clinic.
Derek was taken to hospital where he was put in an induced coma and it was more than a year before he returned home to his wife and their children in April 2021, needing around-the-clock care. Kate has now confirmed that Derek suffered the cardiac arrest while staying at a brain cell clinic in Mexico while she was mid-flight on her way to collect him. Though doctors were able to restart his heart, he never regained consciousness and after being flown home, he "slipped away" with his wife and children by his side.
"We had more of Derek back. We always knew his injuries could take him, but it all felt so positive at that point, it was the furthest from my mind that anything could happen."
