Between 20 and 30 State-owned accommodation centres with 14,000 beds for asylum seekers will open by 2028 under new plans approved by the Government.
The Department of Integration has agreed to lease two locations from the HSE. This involves land in Crooksling, near Brittas in Dublin, and in Truder in Wicklow. It is also examining the use of Thornton Hall, which is owned by the Department of Justice. Asked by the Irish Mirror how much the new 14,000 beds would cost, Mr O’Gorman warned that he could not say as it may drive up the price.
Mr O’Gorman said that it is likely that there will need to be between 20 and 30 State-owned accommodation centres. It is estimated that between 13,000 and 15,000 asylum seekers will arrive each year.Justice Minister Helen McEntee, meanwhile, confirmed that Ireland will be opting into the new EU Migration pact.
The legislative changes will provide for a new border procedure to quickly process people who are unlikely to be granted international protection. There will be accelerated processing for those from safe countries, those with no or false documents and those who have crossed borders illegally.
