Euro zone inflation subsided unexpectedly last month, solidifying the case for the ECB to start lowering borrowing costs from record highs

The European Central Bank could start cutting interest rates in June after a continued slowdown in inflation in the euro zone, ECB policy-maker Pablo Hernandez de Cos said on Wednesday.

Consumer price growth in the 20 nations sharing the euro currency slowed to 2.4 per cent in March from 2.6 per cent a month earlier, defying expectations for a steady rate as food, energy and industrial goods prices all pulled the headline figure lower. The ECB has been cautious in starting to ease policy because it only expects inflation back at its 2 per cent target next year.

Austrian central bank governor calls for end to ECB subsidy for commercial banksAustrian central bank Governor Robert Holzmann has called for the European Central Bank (ECB) to stop subsidizing commercial banks and to cut interest payments on the cash lenders received from the central bank. Holzmann argues that the current structure places a major burden on the financial outcomes of central banks and that deficits cannot be run indefinitely. The issue stems from the ECB's quantitative easing program, which has led to commercial banks parking excess liquidity at the ECB at a 4% rate.
