Parliament’s Labor-led human rights committee is calling for the Albanese government to significantly rein in the powers of its controversial deportation bill, warning it would break up families and breach people’s legal rights.
“In relation to mandatory minimum criminal penalties for any non-compliance with such a direction, the committee considers these to be incompatible with the rights to liberty and to a fair trial,” the report says, recommending the removal of a minimum one-year sentence for refusing to cooperate.
