Full list of DWP reforms planned for people on PIP, Universal Credit

Rishi Sunak has outlined a series of significant changes to the welfare system, targeting PIP, Universal Credit, legacy benefits and long-term sickness. The Prime Minister's proposed reforms aim to control escalating costs, tackle inactivity, long-term illness and benefit fraud.

Mr Sunak has stated that the consultation on proposed changes to PIP will provide a "more objective and rigorous approach" in the benefits system. He suggested that more medical evidence might be needed to support a PIP claim, and that some individuals with mental health issues may be offered talking therapies or respite care instead of cash transfers, reports the Daily Record.

He said: "In a cost of living crisis, looking to slash disabled people's income by hitting PIP is a horrific proposal. Sanctions and ending claims will only heap more misery on people at the sharp end of our cost of living crisis."Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced plans to make the following changes to the welfare system.Over 450,000 individuals have been jobless for six months and more than 250,000 have been unemployed for a year.

The Prime Minister further explained that the UK Government is dedicated to abolishing the Work Capability Assessment entirely and introducing a new personalised, tailored approach to employment support. The aim is to help disabled individuals and those with health conditions reach their full potential. These planned reforms are anticipated to decrease the number of people assessed as not needing to prepare for work by 424,000 by 2028/29.

It should be noted that although the policy and regulations concerning Fit Notes apply to Great Britain, the delivery of Fit Notes operates within health systems - these systems are devolved, implying that this change may not take place in Scotland.The implementation of Universal Credit will be sped up to transfer all remaining individuals on Employment and Support Allowance onto the modern IT system.

In addition to these, the Government is introducing legislation through the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill. This will enable the Department for Work and Pensions to receive information from third parties that may indicate fraud. The UK Government claims this is one of the most significant reforms to benefit fraud laws in over 20 years and will save taxpayers £600 million by 2028/29.
